Marakwet Culture
Digital Preservation Platform
Named after the Marakwet word for "grandfather," Kugo honors the elders who are the keepers of our cultural heritage. Together, we preserve, document, and teach the Marakwet culture for future generations.
The Challenge
The Marakwet language, spoken by hundreds of thousands of people across Elgeyo-Marakwet County in the Rift Valley of Kenya, stands at a critical crossroads. For generations, it has thrived as a vibrant oral tradition, passed down through stories, songs, and daily conversations. However, this rich linguistic heritage exists without standardized written documentation, making it vulnerable to the forces of modernization and globalization.
The language encompasses five distinct dialects, each reflecting the unique cultural and geographical characteristics of different Marakwet communities. Yet with increasing urbanization and the dominance of English and Swahili in education and commerce, these dialects face erosion. Without immediate action, critical linguistic knowledge, cultural wisdom, and generations of oral history risk being lost within a few generations, taking with them irreplaceable aspects of Marakwet identity and heritage.
